Staying in NE DC

Anonymous
Booked an airbnb near Florida Ave NE and 11th St NE (slightly south of there so won't need to deal with traffic on Florida). Will take uber to see the DC attractions (downtown mall, Smithsonian, Capital Hill). We won't be out after dark much, other than to park and turn in for the night. We have a large group so couldn't find anything in NW or Capital Hill. Please comment on safety.

OP what is your baseline for safety? What sort of area do you live in, what's your experience in cities?

I live in that neighborhood so obviously I feel fine walking around my own neighborhood. I have family members who feel very uncomfortable in my neighborhood because it involves being around things they aren't used to.

Everyone's comfort level is different. I do not think you are in danger in the neighborhood, but there are things you need to be alert to and think about. This will be obvious to people who have lived in neighborhoods like this before but not to people who are unfamiliar with this environment, so it's hard to know what to say without a level set.

OP here. I've lived in another part of NE DC years ago. Now live in suburbs of another city. I understand the need to be street smart. Will have extended family with me who may be slightly less comfortable. Just wasn't sure about this immediate area in terms of car theft, visibility of drug use/ dealing, etc. Also, pedestrian safety, even though we won't walk around here much will need to get to and from car.

You will be fine. H St is kind of sketchy lately. But I still go out there because we have some good newish restaurants on H (since you were here last). Daru, Tapoori, Henceforth the brewery, etc.

You’ll be fine as long as you have basic street smarts and aren’t out walking around drunk at night. WV Ave gets sketchy there and so does H St and possibly K St. So I don’t think strolling around there after dark will be fun.

Pedestrian safety is likely a bigger issue - be careful crossing Florida and H.

On the other hand don’t be scared of about walking to Union Market. It’s definitely a must in that location. Yummy food.

I live in this neighborhood. It’s a great family friendly neighborhood. I don’t walk around drunk at 3am but that’s about it. I do go out and come home late. People walk their dogs late, etc. You’ll be fine.

Definitely walk down to H and up to Union Market for good food. You can also walk to Eastern Market. What’s your group like? We can give recs.

Another neighbor (I'm south of H St but familiar with that area) agreeing. No issues, especially if you are not walking home after dark. Unless people in your group have mobility issues, you can easily and safely walk to restaurants and H St or Union Market.

The risk of car theft isn't zero, but it's not something I'd worry about. Do not leave any visible items in the car, of course.

If you do want drugs, you could ask the guys hanging around just north of Fl and 12th, but I agree with others that it's not a big problem.
