| DD is thinking of switching to accounting as a major, from journalism. She might keep journalism as a minor. She is worried journalism won't lead to a good job. Wdyt? Is accounting a "solid" major still? |
| AI will end up replacing accounts. |
| I’m not sure about AI, but there is a shortage of accountants isn’t there? |
| Tell her to look into fund accounting. There is a shortage of accountants. |
| My son is an accounting major so I read up on it at times. Seems to be a shortage but on the other hand, new graduates are having a difficult time landing their first job. Main complaint is that the job openings are requiring 3-5 years of experience. |
And why is that a problem? Shouldn't most new hires in Accounting have 3-5 years experience upon graduation or a job pre graduation? My brother is an accountant. My brother and I both do Accounting. My brother worked at an accounting firm all through college and they hired him upon graduation and I worked in Accounting at two firms and got hired a third firm a few months after graduation. Neither of us were looking for jobs as already had jobs it was just going from part time to full time at our firms. My brother at 28 was in charge of a 40 person Accounting department. By 28 he had a decade of work experience |
She is smart and has a good plan. Journalists are being laid off all over the place. Most of those jobs will never come back thanks to the Internet. Accounting is likely a harder degree than Journalism, but it has good job prospects - provided she also gets her CPA. The CPA exam is multi-part and the same exam is given nationwide. Most people pay for a study / prep class before sitting the exam. |
|
I’m a CPA and would be interested in hiring someone who can write and be an accountant. Most of the younger accountants I’ve encountered can barely write a sentence, so your daughter will have a leg up!
I am not worried about AI yet. It gets very basic accounting problems wrong. Someone tried to sell me on their AI-generated financial reports and visualisations … and they were utter crap. A human element is still needed—for now, anyway. |
Accountants who can work with AI will still have a job. But the entry level is definitely being gutted. |
Some colleges are offering AI for Business. Wouldn’t it be useful for entry level to have that knowledge? |
| Accounting is better than Journalism as a major definitely. Before she gets ahead of herself and officially switches have her take the first two classes for the major. She may love it or hate it - go from there. |
| My DS graduated with an accounting degree this year and had a job lined up before graduation. |
Entry level is getting redefined. 30 years ago entry level meant bookkeeping. 10 years ago entry level meant consolidation. 10 years later entry level will mean something completely different. |
| To me, a journalism job is much more interesting, but accounting has much better job prospects and better pay. |
+1 Solid advice. |
