Cold weather motivation issues

Anonymous
Anyone else have big cold weather motivation problems? I feel so cold all the time and cannot summon the motivation to work out. I have a peloton at home so it couldn’t be easier. I am just so cold all I want to do is go back to bed and stay warm.

This problem seems to get worse as I get older. I am 50. I don’t know how I am going to make it through the winter. I feel tired, cold, and lazy.

I feel this way in the summer, when the slightest movement leaves me feeling sticky and sweaty. The good news is: we have climate control. Also, it's MUCH easier to layer for warmth than it is to cool off. Invest in a couple nice pairs of wool leggings. They're better at regulating temperature than cotton, and the wardrobe change might help motivate you to go do the thing. REI has a smartwool pair on sale right now (extra 20% if you're a member): https://www.rei.com/product/246624/smartwool-active-ribbed-leggings-womens

Turn the heat on. Seriously.

The it off when you start exercising.

Dress like a bear and go for a walk.

First, find out the root cause of your lethargy. Maybe it’s your thyroid, or a vit D deficiency with its own array of symptoms, including depression. Test, don’t guess.
Second, find an internal motivation, and go for an outdoor walk. I’m pushing you out of the door .

I wear a sweater when I start peloton in 5 minutes I’m warmed up and strip it off.

Wear layers on top when you get on the peloton. I usually have a long sleeve shirt and a Patagonia or sweatshirt on top and then one by one end up taking them off as I warm up on the bike.

Just getting started is most of the battle. So just get on the bike and go.

I'm like this too. I try to go for a walk in the sun during the day, and I use a light therapy lamp 1-2x a day. I'm 53 and a mess because I'm always cold in the winter, yet if I do any kind of activity I immediately become sweaty. Earlier today I was vacuuming in a tank top and now I'm on the couch in three layers and a blanket. I do think perimenopause messes with temperature regulation, which can manifest as lack of motivation in the cold or heat (which I also have too, since I now get sweaty all over in approx five seconds).

Seasonal Affective Disorder for me. I literally want to hibernate. Eat carbs and become a couch potato wrapped in a blanket.

Heat the house better and wear warmer clothes, after a hot shower.

The Peloton has so many different workouts-- try mixing it up. I actually like strength classes so I can motivate myself to do a 20-minute one, and then oftentimes I tack on a 20-min ride. Or, do yoga one morning and ride the next. Wear a jacket and take it off once you get moving.
