Can I record my building manager?

Anonymous
The TL/DR is that I live in an apartment complex and the building manager is doing planned upgrades to the apartments, things like new faucets, new appliances, etc. These things are happening on a rotating basis, so this week he’s swapping faucets and next week everyone is getting stoves. My rental agreement made it clear that they can enter the apartment at any time to make repairs. I haven’t been home for any of the repairs, but they always leave a note when they have been inside the apartment. I live alone, with my two children, but they weren’t with me the last time the building manager entered my apartment. I have a suspicion that the building manager went through things in my apartment the last time he was here. Things that he wouldn’t have needed to touch were disturbed when I returned home—I got new appliances, so he wouldn’t have needed to be in my bedroom at all, for example.

He’s coming sometime this week to do work in the bathroom. I feel compelled to record in my rooms, but I’m not even sure if that’s legal (Virginia) since it would be hidden like a nanny cam. I don’t even know what I would do if I caught him? Is it illegal for me to record him in my bathroom, since there is an expectation of privacy? What about my bedroom and living room?

Also, any ideas of ways I can cheaply record him, that Amazon can deliver today for setup?

Is your circuit breaker box in your kitchen? If not, he would need to be in other rooms in order to install depending on the connection. If he is installing faucets, he may want to shut the water off in your apartment which might not be in the kitchen or bathroom.

Maryland bans recording people.

Remember the Monica Lewinsky phone call case?

OP clearly says she is in VA.

VA is a one party consent state.

You can always record inside your own home.

In the bathroom? What happens if he uses it?

Maryland bans AUDIO recordings in places without reasonable expectations of privacy without prior consent. Video is perfectly fine.

You have to post a conspicuous notice that video recording is taking place

Everybody should act like they are being recorded all the time these days. The building manager is a fool. Nail him, OP.

Cite the VA statute that says that.

Can you just lock the room doors? Of course, he could easily pick it, but that's unlikely for a casual snoop. And maybe leave things on the floor near the door that he would have to move to get to anything. Only a crazy person would go in after all that!

Yes you can. VA is a one party consent state. Camera the whole place up and bust him
. Trust your instinct in this case. Im sure you're right.

i'll ask it again. Where does it say in your link that you have to "post a conspicuous notice that video recording is taking place?" Because nothing in your link says that.
