Tom Cruise’s honorary Oscar

Tom Cruise was awarded an Honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards (GA)

I had not heard of these GAs (apparently Debbie Allen, Dolly Parton and production designer Wynn Thomas were also honored).

The NYT said the GA has become an awards campaign stop.

I don’t really understand how getting honorary academy awards helps stars to campaign for actual academy awards. Do these GA mean anything?

I don't think getting a GA helps someone get an Oscar, I think the idea is that potential Oscar contenders attend the GAs, may participate in presentation of the honorary awards, and "work the room" and this can help them garner nominations and votes when the Oscars role around.

If you have a movie coming out that is eligible for the 2026 Oscars, attending the GAs can help people in the Academy see you as a member of the club and help make you (and your movie) top of mind. You want Academy members to actually go see your movie (or watch the screener you send them) and view it in a positive light.

The Oscars are super political and have only gotten more so in recent years. There is a lot of official and unofficial lobbying of Academy members. The GAs are part of that.

Ok thanks - that makes more sense, and explains why Cruise’s acceptance speech sounded like he had just won the Nobel peace prize.

Why? He seems to be very driven and hard-working. He doesn't pretend to be something he's not. He knows what sort of actor he is and he sticks to it. Is it the Scientology thing? Honestly, not worse than any other religion.

He deserves it, after a lifetime of doing blockbuster movies. Maybe not to the taste of the DCUM crowd, but I liked them.

Also, I never listen to speeches, they're all cringe.

They're usually mentioned at the ceremony, but have already been awarded earlier.

It’s an actual Oscar.

It’s mostly for those who have not received an acting Oscar but have significantly contributed to the industry.

Tom should have received best actor for Rain Man. He carried the emotion through that entire movie while Dustin Hoffman stood there pretty much emotionless.

These are the men she chose to be in her life, to be her lovers and romantic partners, to have kids with. And these men mostly raised the kids as it is well known that Nicole is a workaholic and rarely home.

TC kids decided to stay with Scientology.

Since she got majority of time with KU kids, they probably chose to stay with her. Being the superstar she is I am sure she had it in her contract for the kids to be with her while filming. Pls, wasn’t he on the road a lot with concerts, American Idol, etc.?
