Bates? Dc has been asked to visit as a recruited athlete.

Anyone know what the culture is like? Preppy? Liberal? Mixed?

It’s a mixed culture leaning more liberal, but you will find all kinds of kids there. Great place. Strong tight knit community.

Of the Maine LACs Bates, Bowdoin and Colby, the atmosphere at Bates may be the most liberal.

Here at Bates now for a sporting event. There is not much to the campus? It seems compact compared to the other NESCACs I’ve been to. And the students seem very liberal by looks at least. Don’t love the town.

My nephew plays soccer at Bates. Very mainstream kid and he loves it. Seems like a supportive and fun community.

We visited last spring. It seemed like a very warm place. Food was pretty good. I liked it better than Colby.

We visited both Bates and Bowdoin last summer. DC wasn’t impressed about the location as an athlete.

I live in Maine and have spent a decent amount of time on the Bates campus. I like the campus itself quite a bit - it’s small but pretty, classic New England LAC. I prefer it to the Colby campus both in appearance and location.Lewiston obviously has its challenges but beyond that it’s a good location with easy access to natural beauty, not far from Portland et cetera. Lots of kids from our local high school have gone there over the years and I have generally heard very positive things. I think some combo of liberal/athletic/preppy is the overall vibe there, probably a little less intellectual than Bowdoin.

Bates is liberal; located in a run-down town.

It is easy to love LACs on a visit and during one's first semester after which the location and the smallness are likely to affect one's experience.

If you visit Bates College, then try to visit Colby & Bowdoin as well to be a fully informed, potential consumer of Maine LACs. Bowdoin has the nicest location while Colby has the nicest facilities.

Weak endowment relative to peers. That means greater risk of poor facilities/maintenance and stagnate growth across everything from faculty talent to student career outcomes. New President trying to make a difference on $. Has specifically targeted endowment. Long road ahead. Compare to Colby and the investments they are making in everything from the arts to new student housing. Different level.

In the very recent past, Bates has experienced an exodus of faculty.

That's an understatement

Maine BBC. Visit in person to see which one you feel

DC turned down a recruiting offer from Bates because it's way too liberal. Very Greta Thunberg and that's not DC's scene.

I have a kid at Bates and have seen no evidence of this supposed uber-liberal vibe. It's a very mainstream, outdoorsy campus and student body. Very friendly community. Lewiston is not a great city right now, but it's more proximate to Portland and other nice parts of the state than Colby's location in Waterville.
