| Why are Chromebooks given to kids starting in kindergarten given what we know about plummeting literacy rates, decimated attention spans, the inability to read and comprehend AND in light of AI bring poised to make most computer science jobs obsolete? Why isn't there an uproar over this? Do parents not know the extent of it? I subbed for two years and was aghast as a parent in this district. Some schools are better than others but all are over reliant on the screens. I only worked in wealthy neighborhood ES and MS. Teachers also use low quality YouTube videos to teach lessons - I'm not talking about sub plans, I'm talking about the teachers being there. They are given a screen as a babysitter in this school district that. The kids bring the Chromebooks to art class. The class sizes are too big but why can't they use a pencil and paper? |

So many threads.
It's a 'DIY, dear parent school district' https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1294277.page |
YouTube may be blocked on the Chromebooks but the teachers show it to them on the big board |
This is so sad. When I read to the class, the kids would huddle around me and pay rapt attention like they've never been read to before. I wish I were exaggerating. |
If you are a teacher, do more reading. If you visited as a parent/adult to a student in the classroom, try to go in more to read if school allows. mcps has agreement with google -- (chrome, google) Write to BOE. Teachers' "hands are tied" or that's the lame excuse they have. |
I agree with you on getting chromebooks out of classrooms, but little kids have always huddled around someone doing a good job reading aloud. |
Ah sorry I'm the op. When I would sub. Happy to organize politically around this issue in light of BOE elections next year. Idk if this is the right forum. Prob not since anonymous. |
| Yeah, my 1st grader talks about "watching" books - because that is what they do at school. |
Start with MCCPTA They may have a general email address to which you can write your in-person experiences as a sub |

We are fighting against big tech and we all need to fight. Kids online early gets them addicted (my kid never went online until they were given ipads in school - now always wants to!).
More importantly, their data is also very valuable - by the time they are 16, insurance companies will use their data from apps used in school, to determine how conscientious they are, how smart, how impulsive, to determine how likely they are to get into a car accident. There is no law that says that apps like Lexia can't sell your child's data. I can't believe there isn't a bigger pushback against this. |
| Chromebooks aren’t the problem. The curriculum, Mcps, admin and teachers are. They would rather not put the effort in. |
Your post makes no sense. You should have taught moderation. |

Please consider signing this petition- we need sane policies regarding Chromebooks and other distractions.
