FaceTime—What does this mean?

Tween DD has a new friend and I had a lull at work and decided to do a check of her recent activity, something she knows I do occasionally, I noticed she and new friend have been FaceTiming often and that during many of the calls it says:

Incoming call
Shared your screen
Allowed [phone] to control iPhone

What does this mean? I tried googling it but I can’t find anything, but I may be searching incorrectly? Is she allowing this girl to remotely access her phone somehow?

I’m going to speak with her when I get home, but I want to know what I’m dealing with here.

Very bad. It means she let another person take total control of the phone - she gave full consent to someone else who is remote. It could have spyware. It could be taking pictures or recording audio without her knowledge.

Go to settings to Privacy & Security, clear all permissions, and put phone in lock-down.

Ok, I did all of that and everything looks normal. She doesn’t have social media or anything like that. What am I looking for that could be spyware?

Look for a Strange app. New app she did not mean to install. Odd behavior. Malware might not be visible at all though.

If you use iCloud, it should have a backup of your data. If bot, then my suggested next step is to retrieve/copy/backup any photos, videos or music from the phone onto a computer at your house.

Then, make an appointment with the Apple Store's "Genius Bar" (i.e., apple tech support) and have them do a full factory reset and clean reinstall. This should wipe the phone and get it clean, but any non-backed up data will be lost.

Is this new friend her age? Someone from school?

Yes, most likely hidden in a malicious app. Look for Chat apps: Whisper, YikYak, and Omegle
And Hide Apps: Vault - Hide Pics, App Lock

They often make information accessible to others on the App, while trying to hide the activity.

And after that, set the parent controls to require your permission to download new apps, even free ones. You can probably get the Genius Bar to walk you through that, if needed, but it’s pretty easy.

I don’t understand why everyone is jumping to malware. These two are the same age and they know each other in real life? It sounds like two kids just playing around with the functionality of their devices.

+1. What if they are just playing games?Don’t jump to the conclusion they are doing something bad. If you are really that worried, talk to your kid and ask what’s going on.

Um, people here are crazy. It could also just be that she wanted to show her friend some photos or a video and shared her phone screen that way.
