Credit Card Fees Now Everywhere!

Anonymous
I feel increasingly annoyed at the 3% credit card fees being levied by retailers, the doctor's office, contractors doing work in my home, etc. Everyone looking for more money! Is this because of tariffs? To avoid increasing costs on the goods themselves? If I pay cash, it just mitigates the advantages of having the credit cards in the first place with the points and all. I will just get rid of my credit cards.

Just very annoying. Is anyone else seeing a dramatic increase on these? Are you using your debit cards more instead?

Contractors have always wanted a paper check. I'm not seeing an increase, but I wasn't happy to see my new Virginia county have a fee on an ACH payment. So, I had to send a physical check.

I'm pp and we have tons of cc points. Just booked a 5-star hotel in NYC on them.

I just use cash anytime they try to charge fees or give cash discounts. Carry more cash.

I definitely would not use a debit card to avoid those fees and, if anything, I would use cash.

This has nothing to do with tariffs but rather merchants trying to mitigate the interchange fees they have to pay. It's about to get a lot worse btw if the court approves the settlement in a long-running litigation over these fees.

My pediatrician's office just announced this change. I haven't seen it "everywhere" but it's certainly becoming more common.

This is OP - so a debit card doesn't automatically cancel out these fees? Only physical cash?

I can't believe more people aren't seeing these changes. Just yesterday, a restaurant charged us 3% more when we tried to pay by credit card. I am seeing it all the time.

I posted above not to use debit and yes, I think it would it's just that I wouldn't use a debt card due to potential security issues, it is riskier. You could, I suppose, have a separate account at a separate bank that you don't keep a lot of money in and use that for debit card transactions.

Fee on ACH? Yikes

This. Merchants have to pay the credit card issuer 3% for the 'privilege' of processing the payment. They are just passing on that fee to you vs. eating it or raising prices. I mean, you didn't really think your credit card points were free, did you? Someone pays for them - it was just less transparent to you in the past.

Used to just be a cost of doing business.

I'd rather receive a cash discount and have the fees rolled in.

NP. Yes. THIS is what is becoming more common and it is outrageous.

My kids' aftercare charges 3% for credit cards, 1% for autopay using your bank. There isn't a way to pay without a fee. It annoys me because we spend thousands there a month.

I noticed this too. It started restaurants and small businesses charging the fee and now it’s caught onto everybody. What’s frustrating is the places that don’t take cash and impose the credit card fee. I think I’m going to go back to check writing!

I mean isn't there a big cost associated with accepting cash? Having to hire Brinks trucks and deal with the cash?
