Tween blackheads

Anonymous
My 5th grader is already starting to get the occasional break out and has blackheads in a few places. It seems so young to me! I have very different skin and am afraid of being too intense at such a young age. They already wash their face regularly but don’t do much else. I got salicylic acid when they got their first real zit for a spot treatment.
I don’t think people lather on the harsh astringents and benzoyl peroxide we used and their skin is very sensitive and dry in patches.

What are your very young tweens doing for skin care? It feels like overkill to go to a dermatologist already but I am considering it because I feel so lost.

Cetaphil has acne wash along with moisturizer for skin with acne or you can just get the wash for sensitive skin.

There are masks that help blackheads. Kiehls has a good mask. Just go with the products that are known to be gentle.

Just my opinion but I think Neutrogena sucks.

Is it truly blackheads? Much of the time it's sebaceous filaments.

Some are definitely black heads, some could be sebaceous filaments. Their skin has some dry patches too. I like the idea of a mask once in a while to clear things out on top of a gentle daily routine.

Use a gentle cleanser (I like Vanicream) and a salicylic acid in problematic areas. Paula’s Choice is a good one.

I really like TBH brand for early blemishes. Very gentle but effective and designed for tweens.

My tween likes Bubbles brand from Target. But I don’t think any of those have salicylic acid for actual blemishes.

My middle schooler washes with Cerave morning and night. We tried a salicylic wash once a week, but her face just can't tolerate it.

It’s really not. This is prime puberty season. Please take her to a dermatologist and get a good skincare/treatment foundation now. The Cetaphil routine always recommended here isn’t going to cut it for a tween already getting acne/blackheads. And using OTC SA is a good way to irritate her skin.

Blackheads come from oily skin so you need to find something to help turn that over. Winlevi is supposed to be a good cream for oily skin.

If you have a flexible budget acne facials a few times a year would be good.

Don't use those toxins.
Just stick to alcohol (isoproply only, NOT ethanol that you drink or is in hand sanitizers, as it overdries the skin) and use some dish detergent on the nose when showering.

Other than that learn to squeeze the goo out with a tool or with a tissue and fingers.

lol this cannot be serious. Isopropyl aka rubbing alcohol is very drying. Dish detergent is also super drying and not meant for facial skin.

Interesting to see that RFK Jr has joined the thread.

You don't know what you are talking about, just repeating advertising propaganda.
