APUSH vs Honors US History

Anonymous
Can someone tell me what are the differences in workload between the 2? My child is currently in AP World and doing fine but it’s a ton of work and their only AP class. Looking ahead to junior year….is APUSH worth it?? My child is a slow reader/worker so that is my concern. If they will have to do all that in history honors anyway, does it really matter which one? Thanks for any insights.

My kid did great in AP world but decided not to do APUSH because they wanted to take a number of other AP classes. From what I hear, it is a lot of work and my DC is appreciating that they can spend time on their other classes which are more likely to be related to their college major etc. They have 4 AP classes so I don’t think colleges will think it’s not rigorous (not aiming for Ivy or top 10). No regrets here.

APUSH is A LOT of reading and writing, at least at our school. My junior chose honors in the spring and then switched to APUSH just before school started - no idea why. But they do like the class and have a very good teacher. (They did not take AP World last year.) I think without a good teacher, it would be a slog.

Do you mind sharing the other APs?

If they took APWorld and did well, they should be fine in APUSH. They have had exposure in several years to the material already; they learned how to do the History APs with APWorld.

DC got tons of credit towards his general credits with the history and government APs. It helped him get sophomore status from the get go- which helped with status for getting into classes.

My kid is not an academic standout and says that AP World was the hardest class she took. APUSH and AP Gov are much easier in her opinion.

I’m more worried about the time commitment with the reading involved in APUSH. I’m not concerned about grades - I know my child would be fine. But my child is a slower worker. We are looking for more work life balance.

I think that World vs APUSH will depend on the teacher. For my kid, APUSH is a lot more reading and writing.

Yes, it depends. DS had the "easy" AP World teacher, but his friends spent hours more on the class each week. Anecdotally, it didn't seem like AP scores were different based on the teacher, but they may be.

Is US History honors going to be as reading/writing intensive as AP?

No, of course not.

Any thoughts on DE US History? What is the difference between that and APUSH?

APUSH is a ton of writing. If your DC struggles with organization and writing, do not take that class.
