What age was your dog neutered or spayed?

AKC recommends waiting until well after 1 yo for many breeds

We have always had pound puppies that were spayed/neutered at around 14-16 weeks. I know it is not the recommended thing, but it sure was nice to have male dogs that never learned any behaviors like humping or marking. Currently on dog #3.

My little mutt was spayed at about 8 months -- we let her go through one heat cycle due to an inverted vulva that caused chronic UTIs (it did fix the problem).

When the vet said. Consistent with breed guidance.

7 years old. He comes from a champion line and was supposed to become a father. Our arrangement with the breeder was that we could have him if we did not neuter. Turns out the breeding matches did not materialize and he developed an enlarged prostate, which can happen with intact males. His prostate is now back to normal.

I think we did it around 9 months, I forget. Our vet doesn't do a lot of them and they called and said they'd do it so we did.

I know! Not only did he not get to procreate, but he got an enlarged prostate as well. I feel terrible for him.

Dog 1: 2 years old, when dropped at shelter
Dog 2: 1.5 years old, when found by rescue
Dog 3: 2 years old, after first heat cycle (waited for 2nd but it never came)
Dog 4: still intact at 3 (boys are so much easier than girls!) Potentially breeding him if he podiums at nationals this year in our sport which I expect he will. No plan to neuter until it’s a health thing at 8+, the hormones are good for physical demands of sport. Life throws curve balls though so who knows.

I think we did it around then too. Breeder required it by a year and I was very tired of all the neutered males popping off at him and wanted him to have friends again.

10 months. Female dog, mixed breed, rescue, that timing was vet’s recommendation.
