Open house — ? For high school parents

Anonymous
Do you go to your kid’s open house day? Our school is inviting parents to visit their kid’s classes.

Absolutely not; although we did joke with our kids about all the ways we could embarrass them if we did go.

Is this like back to school night?
Anonymous
No, not for High school.

Yes of course. Mostly it’s a chance to see the school and classrooms, and teachers. You can then put faces to names when you’re discussing classwork.

If your kid might need help it’s good to say hello and introduce yourself. No need to have conversation- it’s not the time.

My kid reported seeing exactly one parent in all of his classes today.

Same! We do go to back to school night.

We went to back to school night. A handful of teens were also there with their parents.

My parents went to them in the 80s, when I was in school. They’re a nice way to be peripherally involved.

Open House at our school is mostly for prospective families. Is yours different?

Open house at our school yesterday allowed parents to go to all of the classes with their kid to observe for the day. Including at the high school.

Yes. Exactly.

I did, and it was so crowded with families it was standing room only. I guess it depends on the school. It was nice to see their new friends and the warmth in interactions between DC and teachers.

Did you go to HS or elementary school? I always went in younger grades but following my kid from class to class for the full day of HS felt like a bit much.

Or maybe it was more freshman parents? My kid is an upperclassman so that might also make a difference.
