I am looking for educational advocate recommendations for my child in MCPS. I need someone with experience advocating for a non-speaking autistic student in middle school.
Thank you |
| For this get an attorney not an advocate. Advocate field isn't regulated, there are some really bad ones out there who do not know what they are doing. |
| Thank you but I prefer an advocate at this juncture. Please share any recommendations. |
why? |
| You need an attorney. |
Are you looking for help with a new placement or just having the IEP implemented in the current placement? Try Weinfeld Education Group. |
I recommend Liz Capone. We used her last year with my 8 yo DS with level 2 autism and extreme behaviors when overstimulated. She walked us through a mediation with our district where we got exactly what we wanted, a 1-to-1 aide. She used to teach children with more involved needs, and I found her very knowledgeable. |
NP. Yes, but the good ones who know what they are doing do something completely different than what a lawyer offers. OP, find someone who is in and around MCPS for meetings, who knows the personalities, can explain neuropsychs and can recommend practitioners and schools. Monica Martinez is one place to start. |
+1 Sometimes an advocate is sufficient to help you depending on what your needs are. |
| Thanks, everyone! sounds like Liz Capone and Monica Martinez are two to reach out to - i am trying to make sure my child is getting all services they are to receive- and that the iep is sufficiently robust - my child is very mellow so I worry about my child's education. |
There are a few others who take cases in MCPS and mentioned in this forum Liz and Monica are unavailable. Good luck to you. |
I use Liz as my advocate as well and hired her last month. She's still actively available and working. |
