quitting if boss says no?

Anonymous

My daughter is in her 20’s juggling a 30h/week job while studying full time and is deteriorating from the stress.

She said she is going to ask her boss for less shifts and if he doesn’t agree then she’ll quit.

I agreed with her but I feel this isn’t a good look? To have your boss deny something and then quit I mean.
Or am I overthinking this?

If she doesn’t want to work 30 hours and the boss says she must work 30 hours, the she only has two options: work 30 hours or quit.

What do you want her to do? Sounds like she is trying to manage demands and self-care so she doesn’t get more run down.

Coach her on how to talk to her boss with the request.

What was the arrangement when she took the job initially? Did she sign up for a 30-hour-per-week position?

She doesn't have to quit in a huff. She can be calm and measured and just explain that she is physically not mentally able to work 30 hours a week right now and that she would understand if he needs to hire someone else.

That’s an insane workload for a full time student. Way too many hours. Why are you letting her take on so much? Yes she should quit if he isn’t flexible enough. It’s not like she’s head of digital marketing or something at this age. She can find something anything better that will allow her to excel at school.

WTF is she working 30 hours a week and going to school full-time? That is NOT sustainable.

Yes, you are overthinking.

you are teaching your daughter to be a doormat who places her needs last

I wouldn’t allow college student to work 30hr weeks. What a waste of the thousands of dollars we save for college from their childhood. Are you paying for school and are you good with wasting your money like this?!!

This is an extremely privileged attitude coming from a place of wealth, that ignores reality for many if not most people in this country.

Many college students work in the range of 30 hours per week while attending school.

Heck, I did it and so did my siblings and many friends.

The only ones who didn't were the rich kids.

It's fine and good for your daughter for having boundaries.

If the 30 hours is too much FOR HER, she has to communicate that fact to her boss. It sounds like school is her priority and, as a parent, I would agree with her. Brainstorm with her on how to communicate with her boss. Can they accommodate less hours through her semester finals? Can she give shifts away to other employees?

+1. teach her to act professionally. why she's working 30 hours/wk while going to school fulltime is the real question here.

That’s a big workload, so she doesn’t sound lazy. If she can’t do it, she can’t do it. So the right move is to try to negotiate a lighter schedule and if she can’t, find another job. Now, that may not be a trivial issue in the current economy, so I’d be careful there.
