University of Dayton

My DS applied for engineering almost as an afterthought because it had the type of program he was interested in. But it wasn’t really on my radar until he just got admitted with merit. Any thoughts or experience? FWIW-he wants a big state school but can’t really articulate why. I think he would do better at a smaller school for social and executive functioning reasons but he would have to buy in to that. He’s introverted, doesn’t drink, not into greek life but he’s fun, athletic. We go to church but definitely are not Catholic (former catholics who left the church for a more inclusive church) Any information on this school would be so welcome.

Neighbor just graduated from there and had a fabulous time. They party a LOT there. They have a huge club and intramural sports program. Church is not central to the student experience from what I can tell. The housing for Jun/seniors is wonderful--all houses near campus (used to be a company town for a factory and these are all the company houses). The houses are what convinced my daughter to apply for next year as a safety (and also got decent merit). I can't speak anything to the Engineering although neighbor kid had some roommates who had internships at a military base close by for engineering. The alumni loyalty is next level as well.

My college roommate's kid goes there and LOVES it. I don't know too many specifics as he's a freshman but my daughter's also applying as they have a degree she's interested in.

When did the kids who have heard already apply?

DS was also just accepted. We all loved our tour there and DS was pleasantly surprised by all the activity and fun being had on campus at the time. He received good merit but is still unsure. He wants a big football school and Dayton, though a big basketball school, doesn't quite have the vibe he's going for.

That said, we have many friends who attended or whose kids attended and we haven't heard one bad thing about the place. The housing is top-notch and the community feeling is above and beyond.

It's going to be a tough choice for DS.

I just responded. DS applied just before Labor Day for EA.

DD applied Labor Day and heard last week.

My DD also got in this week. She applied Oct. 14. She did not get her primary major but they put her in an adjacent major and accepted her.

Have heard wonderful things. And I have been to Dayton and it is lovely. Go visit.

Also got merit aid, which was unexpected.

Fun school. It's a safety for a lot of lower ranked private school kids. It's in Ohio with is a dump.

My son applied there as a backup for engineering a few years ago. There’s definitely a party vibe, but the engineering school is well respected and the kids get jobs. The campus was nice and the facilities/dorms looked nice to me. Their disability services is also known to be good. They have my son merit money. It was his first admit and I thought it was a nice one to have in his back pocket! Alums seem to
love it and everyone we met there was kind and helpful!

While I don't have many specifics about the school I did live in Dayton for about 3 years before turning thirty. Agree with the one poster that there are a lot of interesting internship opportunities at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. A good mid-sized city with an airport that can easily get you back to the DMV.

I'm an alum so my info may be a little dated. One thing that has not changed, every UD alum I've ever met has always loved their time on campus, is super friendly and loves talking about their time at Dayton. It doesn't matter if the person is 80, 60, 45, 23 or a current student. We will ask each other where we lived and if the basketball team had winning seasons. I haven't had to take advantage of alumni networking for jobs. But based on how friendly every alumni I've ever met is, I would imagine the alumni network is strong.

UD is a basketball school - the arena is one of the best in college hoops and it always ranks in the top 20 in the country in attendance. When I was at school, the players were very visible on campus. I'm sure this has changed because of the drinking age (it was 19 when I was in school) but after big wins, the players would often show up at the bar.

Both of my kids applied and were awarded very generous merit aid. Dayton's tuition is fixed for four years - so the amount you pay as a freshman is the same for the next three years. They decided not to attend UD becuase it was too far away - they wanted to be closer to home.

Sincere question: have you ever been to Ohio?

I lived in Ohio years ago. I’m now in the DC region, but I am counting down the days until I can retire and move back.

The state parks are stunning. The cities are great, especially Columbus with all of its lively neighborhoods (Short North, German Village, etc.).

Don’t sell Ohio short.

We have an office there. If you’re in a mega church he should fit right in. It’s one of those places where people say grace before eating in chain restaurants and regularly talk about things their pastor told them. I really like the Dayton - Cincinnati area and think it would be a nice place to end up. Lots of large American legacy companies based in cincy. Huge Air Force base right there. Lots of post graduation job opps.

My son goes to Dayton (but not engineering.)

I highly suggest you visit and go to a basketball game. They are probably all sold out, but you can get tickets on stubhub, etc.

Dayton is actually a really nice area-the university borders the town of Oakwood, which has some gorgeous older homes on tree lined streets. Every time we visit I dream about moving there one day.
