Open gyms or leagues for teens not in club? - not rec

Anonymous
Hello! My 16 yo DD is one of the teens who stopped playing club because of the schedule. She still loves competitive volleyball and still wants to play occasionally.

We were looking at the adult leagues and many seem like she needs to be 18 to join. Do any of you know of anywhere she can still meet up with others to play every now and then? Rec would not be fun for her now.

SYC (Travel). - rec league for grades 4-8, BUT their HS team has tryouts, tournament schedule, uniforms more serious than rec, etc.

Where are you posting from?

We are in McLean. Thanks!

Same question but for our DC-based family? DD would have played U17 this coming season. She always makes her HS varsity team, but made the call (and we fully agree) that academic demands mean she wouldn't be able to do volleyball and give that her all too. So I love OP's question, any DC teams like the one recommended for McLean? And the SYC rec, once you join are you expected to go to all the tournaments they do go to? Or it's more relaxed than that but with good players?

Thanks! Has anyone gone to Libero's open gym? Any real coaching? Maybe we'll try it, curious what level of players & coaches go...

There is little coaching during open gyms. If you are looking for coaching, try clinics or leagues.

What about the ages of the girls and level of play? DD is also interested and doesn’t care about coaching. She just wants to play. She is planning on private lessons to keep up on skills so she can still try out for HS next year if she decides she wants to. -OP.

Arlington's rec centers have pickup volleyball almost every night of the week, but you'd have to check them individually as my info is out of date. Mondays used to be at Lubber Run, Fridays at TJ, for example.

Virginia Volleyball Factory in Manassas has open gyms on Friday evenings for all ages (meaning adults come as well). Our 16 yr old DD has gone there a few times, usually with a friend. It was something like $25 to play for as long as you want (i.e., till closing). The owner's a little rough around the edges (we like him, but if you don't respect the rules of the dojo, he'll get on your case pretty quick).

For anyone that as ever tried these, are they beginner players? I just looked it up and it they are for a few weeks on Friday from 5:30-7:30. This could be a good option for some of us if other players enroll that can play.

Players who can play are typically enrolled in club during the club season and they rarely have time to do additional volleyball.

Unfortunately, this only goes up to 8th grade.
