not in Howard county, but we did pedal power in Anne Arundel and found it helpful. We only did a private lesson, but they offer classes and summer camps.

I think WABA also offers some classes in Howard county https://waba.org/classes/

The rei class in columbia. My twins learned after 1 lesson.

It has to be learned, cannot really be taught. If talking about learning how to ride/balance on a bike.

Come on. You can’t teach this?

not original poster BUT
this happens on every bike riding lesson question. if you don't have something helpful to say, don't post.

I play piano - my kids take lessons. I swim- my kids take lessons. I'm not a good bike rider - I found lessons.

Those are not comparable. You don’t need to be a “good” bike rider to each a child to ride a bike. Can you move the peddles forward and stay upright? If you can, you can teach your kid. If you have literally never ridden a bike in your life, you could teach yourself in probably 15 min then show your kid. It’s quite literally one of the simplest tasks.

REI

But barring SN this is something you could do yourself. It’s like a parenting milestone.

Honestly, you don't need this! Buy your kid a Guardian bike and watch the videos. My 8 year old got it on her first try. I think having an easy to ride bike is the most important thing here.

You don't get it. Rich people don't teach their kids anything. They have hired helps to do it for them.

different poster - not rich....just want my kid to have a skill I don't have and haven't been able to teach myself despite trying. Some of the Northern VA rec programs offer classes.

I don't think they do this at REI anymore. My oldest did it and I tried to schedule something recently for my youngest, and was told they don't offer it anymore.

You literally sit the kid on the hike, give it a push, and tell them to pedal fast. That is it. Past that, it’s just practice to get the hang of it and balance. Cannot believe people outsource this- even if you don’t ride a bike.

NP. This is very dependent on the kid. I taught my kid to ride a bike myself, but it was not a 15 minute task because my kid struggled with it and then got frustrated with struggling and started spiraling. It had nothing to do with the mechanics of riding a bike, which she was always capable of, it had to do with her being a perfectionist who didn't like that the first couple times she tried, it didn't work how she wanted, and not having the emotional maturity to deal with that in a calm way (she was 5, that's okay, she does better now).

My kid took over a year to learn to ride a bike because of this dynamic, so for a year I took her to the park near us and let her "ride" her bike around with her feet on the ground. So using it like a strider bike even though it had pedals. She knew how the pedals worked, I told her "when you're ready let me know and I can help keep the bike stable." Zero pressure. Eventually she put her feet on the pedals and rode off.

Every kid is different. Every kid responds differently to instruction. Some kids do way better with instruction from a teacher than a parent, for instance. They want to show off knowledge and skills to their parent, not learn from them. It's not about how hard or easy it is to teach the specific skill or info, it's about the relationship and feelings.
