Car seats rules

Some moms carpool kids to sport game or activity. I pay attention that they don't have car seats, not even boosters for 6/7 year olds. Is that legal in Montgomery county? I thought police can issue tickets.

Car seats after 3-4 years old is just ridiculous nonsense and borderline insane behavior.

Being in a car seat/booster seat has nothing to do with age and everything to do with a child's height and weight. And, we also found many ditched the car seat too early. Later you will find parents serving alcohol to teens, even though this is illegal. You can parent your child, not others.

No, no car seat is insane.

Agree, but also police are non existent. They aren’t going to pull someone over for this. I’d be more worried about an accident.

copied from Maryland.gov

Maryland’s Child Passenger Safety Law (effective October 1, 2022) requires that children under eight years old ride in an appropriate child safety seat* according to the vehicle and child restraint instructions, unless the child is 4’9” or taller.
Children must ride rear-facing until at least age two.
Every child from 8 to 16 years old who is not secured in a child restraint must be secured in the vehicle’s seat belt, in every seating position in the vehicle.

We mostly had our son in a booster till 8, as is the law in VA. We made exceptions for carpools and things occasionally, and he has always been very tall (and muscular) for his age.

Having said that, I’m not convinced boosters seats are very necessary after age 5. I should do more research, but I certainly am not going to judge others

So don't carpool. Drive your own kid only, every time.

I have two car seats in my car and occasionally I will have one kid sit in the middle. I still have high back boosters because my son is 8 but small for his age. I think we will be switching to just boosters soon.

Not in most states. In fact in 7 states kids can be served alcohol in restaurants and bars as long as their parents are with them.

Do you bubble wrap them up also? Good lord, the mental health issues some parents cause their kids with all their OCD anxiety safety crap, will come back to haunt them.

We have a bunch of extra boosters. I can toss your kid in one if I’m giving them a ride.

^ This person is bad at physics.

OP, it's not legal but also nobody is ticketing this. You can make your own kid use the appropriate seat and you can require appropriate seats for anybody you're driving in your car. This may mean you don't carpool.
