Glad at least that this teacher will get some comfort after having lived through this atrocious act.

A Virginia jury found that an assistant principal acted with gross negligence when a then-6-year-old student shot his first grade teacher in a lawsuit filed over the 2023 shooting.

The jury awarded the teacher, Abby Zwerner, $10 million in damages, with award interest beginning on June 1, 2024.

The verdict comes after the jury began deliberations Wednesday afternoon in the high-profile civil case.

Zwerner was shot in January 2023 in her classroom at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. Her complaint alleged the school's assistant principal at the time, Ebony Parker, failed to act after being informed multiple times that her student had a firearm on the day of the incident and did not let staff search him prior to the shooting.

Doesn't mean she will collect it all.

Exactly.

It's a pretty reasonable award and I think they will pay it out.

She was only able to sue the AP. There's no money there. There might be some insurance but no way 10M.

Good. It's shocking to me the AP did not try to immediately get to the bottom of it after being notified a child in her school had a gun.

The article said the principal was covered by a policy purchased by the school district. The poor teacher will at least get something. Poor woman, the article says she's studying to be a cosmetologist now,but has to wait because her hands haven't healed from the last surgery. Her life was totally wrecked.

Yeah, this approach seems far more effective than gun control.

In the trial they tried to tear her down even more. Disgusting

yeah, but for the gun crazies, guns don't kill people, 6 year olds kill people.

I hope she gets a lot from the school insurance policy.

I'm sure the defense lawyer was paid by the insurance company. Scum.

If a police officer acted, instead of the principal, and the police officer himself shot Zwerner, she would get nothing, due to Qualified Immunity.

What if a plane fell out of sky and crashed into the school?

Also if a police officer *didn't act* when notified.

But of course we expect school administrators to handle school shooters while police officers hide outside.
