Watkins Mill in-person proposed regions session scheduled for Nov. 6 (tomorrow) was changed without notice to Nov. 4

Region 5 is MCPS’s dumping ground once again.

First, all but one school is over 60% poverty under the proposed regions model.

Second, if the regions model passes, region 5 would be blocked from going outside their region to attend the established and successful Poolesville SMCS—their only option would be a brand new fake SMCS at Gaithersburg HS, which will likely be like the Watkins Mill IB program (no new teachers under the new budget. So same teachers, same classes, just a different program classification).

Next, trying to make Crown a holding school when the mayor bent over backwards to get MCPS land donations with the understanding that Crown would alleviate over-crowding. It is unlikely the mayor would have done these kind of negotiations for MCPS to only open a holding school.

And now, changing the engagement session date with no announcement so no one can attend the meeting.

Wanted to warn whoever might have planned on going tomorrow. This is an off-shoot of another thread

I wasn’t about to attend one of those meetings, but now I will monitor their website and show up when they suddenly change the meeting to be on the same day.

I got like 4 messages about the Kennedy meeting despite not being in that region. Nothing about the Watkins Mill one. Did anyone go and can report back?

I got an email from MCPS on 10/29 with the upcoming engagement sessions listed, and it showed Watkins Mill correctly as 11/4, not 11/6.

I think a problem is MCPS is not sending notices to all who live in their proposed regions. So if your child is in a private school, homeschool, or magnet, they may not be getting last minute notices about the date and time of meetings.

It is normal to assume that the dates that were posted on Oct. 23 would remain the same. If there are changes, MCPS should be sending an email blast to highlight this, instead of someone needing to click on a link to find out that there are changes.

What was the title of this email? Could you tell us more about this? I did not receive any such correspondence.

It was in the email entitled "Region 3 Community Engagement Sessions / Boundary Studies & Programs Analysis / Oct. 30, 7 pm" that I received around noon on the 29th and also in the updated version of that email they sent about an hour later. The main email was about the Kennedy meeting, but it included a list at the bottom with upcoming sessions.

I live in the NEC (region 2) and also have a kid at Blair. Not sure who this email was sent to.

OIC—thanks! Yes all the way at the bottom, under the heading “Additional Regional Sessions (Updated Dates and Locations.)” Given the very specific title of that email ("Region 3 Community Engagement Sessions / Boundary Studies & Programs Analysis / Oct. 30, 7 pm"), I would not assume that in this correspondence would be something as consequential as date changes or cancellations for meetings other than Kennedy’s.

Unless I receive an email or text entitled “Updated Dates and Locations and Additional Regional Sessions,” it is normal to assume nothing has changed.

+1

The only partly saving grace is that that all too innocuous notice came out before the Kennedy meeting. If the date had been shifted as a result of that meeting, it would go from incompetence to malpractice.

That's true.
