Elementary Enrichment Webinar

Anonymous
Trying to log in to the most complicated MCPS online meeting that was supposed to begin 7 minutes ago. Has anyone else successfully logged in?

In annoyed it’s a webinar because I want to ask why things are implemented so differently at different schools. Still waiting for my enriched ELA kid to read actual books at school.

What a waste of tune! Tired of hearing about this supposed ELA and Science enrichment that never happens at our school.

This is a great opportunity to hold your school accountable. Quite from the webinar in an email to your child’s teacher about what is supposed to happen and ask how he or she is incorporating it. Keep pushing up the line on up to the principal and AEI if you don’t receive adequate answers.

The problem is that for most of it (until 4th), AEI doesn't even have any real requirements of schools you can point to. They are supposed to offer enrichment but the details are all at the school and teachers' discretion, which means it usually doesn't happen because they're busy focusing on things they have to do to support below-level kids.

Anyone have a summary of what was said?

My experience at our local elementary school is that enrichment is spotty and heavily dependent on the teacher and resources available to them for that year. And always seems to change every few years. Our school is trying to do it during the new FIT/WIN time, but hasn't really gotten anything going yet.

There's no enrichment. Do it at home.

They said it would go up on the MCPS YouTube channel but it could take up to a week

Our school is doing an impressive job of it this year. My advanced 3rd grader is in an ELA enrichment class 4 days a week in which they’ve been reading and discussing a fairly advanced book, and in Math enrichment 1 day a week. My K son who is young for grade and a little behind in certain reading skills is in a fantastic reading support class several days a week in which he is learning skills rapidly. I’m surprised schools are given so much discretion.

There's an MCPS YouTube channel? But I think they're repeating this session 2x.

No, they are doing 4 different sessions but they're all unique. The Weds 11/5 one is on middle school. For ELA enrichment they are really leaning in on using what is built into CKLA which is too bad because it's generally pretty underwhelming.

For grades 4-5 there is a separate guide for ELA block enrichment (both model 1 & 2). For grades 3-5 there is a separate guide for FIT/WIN enrichment. But these guides do nothing if the teachers don't use them.
