| If my kid has a B (85%) in the first quarter, how much she needs to achieve in the second quarter (I guess 95% or more) to get an A in the final for part A? My kid is a freshman in high school, and I just want to know how it will be on the final transcript. Do they have separate grades for each quarter or do they have separate grades for Part A and Part B of a particular course? Any input appreciated. |
| No just semester grades. With an 85 for first quarter, it will be tough to get an A for the semester. Set your expectations lower and you may be surprised. |
| Yes, 85 in the first quarter plus 95 in the second quarter averages to 90, so an A for the semester. The transcript does not have quarter grades, only semester grades (one letter grade each for "Part A and Part B of a particular course"). |
| OP: I think your kid would get an A with a 94 next MP. That would average to an 89.5, and that would round up to an A. And that would be beneifting from not have plus/minus grades in MCPS, because pretty much everywhere else, even with the rounding it would be an A-. |
Yes, but it will be hard to get that 94 with semester exams. |
Are the semester exams written by the teacher or a district assessment? The DAs seem really easy. |
I am told they actually don’t have to include district assessment grades in the grade book. This was news to me but the teacher told my child’s class this, and there was no DA in that class in MP1. |
Funny you should say that. My twins took the same DA and one said it was easy and the other said it was impossible and poorly written. So who knows? |
My kid has a District Assessment in Grade Book forHS Geometry....but my kid said there was a big lag because the teacher needed to get the information on what the grade distribution was for the county to know how to assign a numerical grade to the test score (which they said wasn't quite a curve but something sort of like that.) |
| Do all high school classes have semester exams? |
No |

These are from the MCPS website. They don't answer all the questions but they answer some.
