If you "lost" in the lottery at 6th grade, where did your kid end up?

Just wondering how that worked out? We are not excited for our in-bound (Wheatley) and we know our lottery options, but the odds of getting in anywhere OOB decrease each year. So what happens if you "lose"? Its really late in the year to move if you own a house.

Go private or move.

Two Rivers. Also look at Wells and Eliot-Hine.

Don't assume every year will be harder, it's not as linear as that.

You live near some Friendship schools and I would give them a serious look. They did well on the Bold Performance list this year and that's something I respect, because that can't happen without high quality teaching.

How old are your kids? Do they go to Wheatley now?

If I were you, I'd be lotterying for a spot at a feeder to an acceptable MS well before 6th. You can almost definitely get a spot at JOW, L-T, or Watkins in 4th or 5th, which gets you a spot at Stuart-Hobson. Same with the Eliot-Hine feeders. Even Maury sometimes has spots for 5th.

I'd also lottery for ITDS -- the option of getting in for elementary makes this an easier get than BASIS or Latin.

Personally I'd skip Two Rivers even though it's not hard to get into in upper elementary. S-H and E-H are better options and your are just as likely to get spots in one of their feeders.

If your kid is already in 4th, I'd lottery for Latin and BASIS as well as all the feeders I just mentioned. Throw in CHML just to keep options broad.

If your kid is already in 5th, it's too late for BASIS or Latin. But you can do all the others plus I'd start looking into options for moving (even just temporarily by renting out your home and getting a rental IB fur something you like) as a back up.

The odds of getting in somewhere OOB actually go up in later grades. Especially if you cast a wide net.

If you're really bold you could lottery for DCI feeders too, depending on your comfort with moving to an immersion school in mid or late elementary.

I second Inspired Teaching, was really impressed by their MS.

Sojourner Truth usually goes through their wait-list for MS.

Christian Family Montessori School in Petworth has started a lovely little adolescent program.

If you have a boy, St Anselm's in Brookland is an option.

DCI? How hard is that to lottery into? I’ve heard good things.

Don’t do above with feeders. It will be a disaster. Yoir child won’t understand anything, will be totally lost and miserable and will come to hate schoo and resent you for it.

Harder than Latin and Basis for the spanish track. No seats this year for Chinese. French some seats.

Odds are very, very low from non-feeder. Better have a back up plan for sure.

There are multiple feeders you can get into in 2nd-4th grades.

Private and then on to a selective HS.

There are actually quite a few options in the 6th grade lottery, if you are sort of flexible.

If you do this, please supplement the language, especially the summer before school starts. The kids I know who did well switching late had extra tutoring before and during the school year.
