| We missed it last night. Anyone who went want to share impressions? |
Our family was impressed. Lots of kids and teachers there to share about the school - some hands on examples of some of the science and STEM projects they work on. They shared examples of course progressions in math/science, there was a performance by the band. Overall well run! |
| Why was it not on the school website? How do I find out about these? |
Yes, it was not as easy to find, I only figured it out because I was already signing up for Bannaker and school without walls - I Googled it and initially found it on a page that had been shared by Ida B Wells. I guess maybe that is in an indication of the office/organization/comms? But otherwise we liked what we saw at the open house. Maybe they will be having another? I know school without walls is having at least two |
It is on the website, though kind of buried: https://www.mckinleytech.org/message-from-admissions-and-requirements At the bottom, it says you can RSVP to be informed of future dates. I know last year there were at least two. - happy mom of a happy Tech freshman |
| Thanks. You'd think a tech school could have a decent website.... |
Who manages the website? At our ES and MS, it's the PTA. If the PTA is not doing it, who does it? Walls also has a very out-of-date website. |
I don't know, but both are a little embarrassing. It's one thing for a small elementary school to lean on the PTA for this, but a decent high school should find a way to get it together. |
I agree with you, but I don't know that DCPS makes any provision for websites in terms of funding or someone's job description. The hard part of a website is not the technology, but the consistent gathering and sharing of news and events. Someone has to think through what the community needs and wants to know and then act on it. It's hugely useful for the community, but DCPS doesn't seem to care much. |

My son is a student at McKinley Tech and he also really wishes they would let a class re-do the website.
Most information from the school is shared via with parents directly. |
| I do not know if this is still true but a number of years ago a different school told me the official websites are centrally controlled by DCPS central with fairly onerous procedures for changing/updating info. I think some schools might maintain a separate website to circumvent the DCPS issue (sometimes the PTA does this). |
I was going to say something similar - today there are quicker/better ways to share info with parents and community, whether it is through apps, a FB or Instagram page, etc. At schools we have been at the PTA has paid the domain fee and collaborated with the school. But as parents/PTA leadership rotates, the website is not always the first thing people think to update. In my experience people much more frequently visit newsletters or other school communications instead of a website. Regardless, the Open House was run well, and glad to hear it sounds like they are doing another one. |
If that is true, that is completely insane |
This is the one that central controls: https://profiles.dcps.dc.gov/McKinley+Technology+High+School This is the one that central doesn't control, yet it's still very out of date, missing portions, and generally looks clunky: https://www.mckinleytech.org/message-from-admissions-and-requirements |
| Nothing on Ellington site. Probably best just to call the schools you want. Sounds like Ellington won’t have an open house until December. |
