Traveling with mini dog on the plane

While visiting friends we fell in love with a fostered dog, he’s 13” high x 17” long. How strict are airlines? Delta says 11” high, will they consider a dog laying down, if close in dimensions?

You need to look at what the airline says about the size and weight of approved under seat carriers. The dog needs to be small enough to stand up and turn around.

You will need a TSA approved pet carrier to fly with your dog.
Dog can not be out or on your lap. Must be inside the bag in the space at your feet for the entire flight.

Airline will also ask for a clean bill of health and vaccination letter from your vet.

We have a five pound Yorkshire Terrier Poodle and travel extensively with her.

My wife's Aunt has flown to visit us with her pup a couple of times. I helped check her in for her return flights and the airline took a cursory look at the dog itself, but did review the paperwork and weigh the dog/carrier to make sure it was within their limits.

It’s hit or miss if the flight attendants or gate agents will stop you if the dog is over the height restriction. (It’s technically tip of ears, not head or shoulders too). If you do get prevented from taking the dog on board, what is plan b?

You’ll hear 20 people say they got away with a dog an inch or two over the limit for every 1 who said their same size pet was turned away, but it’s not worth the risk to me. I’ve flown puppies but even my 15 lb dogs are too big to fit the height restriction.

Why do you think the rules don’t apply to you?
