What to put in empty fireplace

Anonymous
We have a gas fireplace we do not use. We redid the mantle and surround and had the gas shut off. We also painted the interior black. The interior decorator suggested putting fake white birch logs (basically logs for a gas fireplace without booking it up). I’m not sure I like that look.

Any other ideas? Are candles dated?

Candles are dated.

I would say go with white birch logs or just cover it up with a gorgeous screen.

We had real birch logs.

We don't use our fireplace at all. It's brass and glass front. I use very good battery candles in front in winter that reflect light off the brass. Then I use a small replica folding Kano screen behind that.

In the fall like now there are miniature real pumpkins in white and orange and a basket of pinecones from our trees.

You could go seasonal, like pumpkins and gourds now, mini Christmas trees or something in December. I personally think it would be cute to DIY paper cutouts of Santa's legs dangling into the fireplace. Birch logs the rest of the year. But if you like candles, go for candles! Life's too short.

I don't think any screen in a fireplace is "gorgeous" and would rather do seasonal things - different sized pumpkins now, then red & green (or blue and white) candles, then red pink and purple, then white, etc.

We have birch logs. I do think they look nice

Sorry I misread. We have real birch logs in a fireplace we don’t use

Poinsettias in the fireplace at Christmas!

I think pillar candles are dated, but if you got a simple hearth candelabra and use white ball candles, that could look nice. There are also large, wide metallic branch or driftwood candelabras which could be fun depending on the rest of your decor. I’m assuming a rather petite fireplace

Wine rack? Sturdy basket with blankets and extra throw pillow or two? Record collection on small shelving? Fern?

If I had a fireplace I didn't use, righ now I would have witches stockings and boots hanging down from the chimney.

Decapitated head of your enemy.

Thanks for the suggestions. The decorator suggested ceramic white birch logs bc she thought real logs would attract bugs.

I’m not organized enough to change the decor seasonally. Plus, we are Jewish and don’t celebrate Christmas.

We have done birch logs in the past, but now have a candelabra with pillar candles and prefer that look. I found it at Arhaus.

My mom had birch logs in her fireplace in the 70’s and 80’s. Personally I’d want to do something else as it seems dated to me.
