What are you paying in fees for your kid to play lacrosse?
Club? Private school? Public? What is the tipping point of when you will no longer pay for your kid to play a sport? Why is there no regulation for equity purposes? |
| This question has been asked before in many of the different posts. What do you hope to gain from this? Validation? Everyone is gong to do what is best for their kids and situation. |

Current rates. Gathering information. Perhaps there is not a consensus on what is best. Perhaps it is time parents advocate for youth sports. Perhaps it is time to stop the greed and bring back morals/values. From a parent who refused to pay club fees and still had a kid recruited, there is a vision where parents do not spend a college fund on a sport in elem/middle/high school. Or I am bored….. |

You can go twice a week to the plasma bank I hear… meet you there. |
Would love to hear how you bucked the trend. How did you get your kid recruited without playing for a club? |
The commitments data is out there and there are very few commitments with no club affiliation, and basically none of those of are upper tier players. Right? |
NHSLS and free agency. See as example: https://adrenalinesc.com/leagues/freeagentregistration/ Most tournaments have the ability to sign up. Coaches reach out. Normally play for free but if worth it, pay for a tournament. My kid got to play against great teams- with video that was sent to coaches. Coaches of all levels responded. This is NOT at all the point- the point is fees to play a youth sport consistently increases making the sport unavailable to kids unless the parents have pockets of cash. It isnt just club but high school teams as well. With the right data, right partners, a little effort —maybe the bleed can be stopped. |
If you really believe that Public HS lacrosse is "free" you are sadly mistaken. |

My take, the fee structure is tough.
Lacrosse clubs, showcases, and tournaments still run, by and large, good people who care about the sport, and aren't going to try to gouge families. The advance of Private Equity into the market may impact that. All that said, the proliferation of showcases, training events, and consultants does create pressure and FOMO. Families with normal, even strong income will be pressed by the travel on top of the fees. Equity is a real issue. Lot of amazing athletes really won't have access on either the boys or girls side. I would offer that clubs and private schools should care about this and work to create opportunities for more players. This happens across a variety of sports today--see Football and basketball--but not so much for lacrosse. That can and should evolve. |

IMHO now that I’ve put 3 kids though k-college lacrosse most of the travel expenses are not worth it for most kids.
1st the vast majority of 6th graders playing lacrosse won’t start on their highschool team let alone play in college. It’s just pure numbers - there are 10 starting spots on the varsity team and if you live in upper class md or va probably Over half the boys and a over a third of the girls in the school played a significant amount of lax. 2nd of the kids who start on their highschool team only a handful will play in college. With the exception of the few of elite private school teams - on those teams a little more than half will play in college. 3rd of the lucky few who play in college - Less than half will it be actually worth it. Many of those players will either go to a college they would have never gone to or find they don’t like the demands of college athletics. 4th of those special players who play in college profitably and truly enjoy it the overwhelming majority are truly gifted athletes. The takeaway is that if your kid does not have superior athletic ability and does not passionately love lacrosse - travel lax is simply a way to keep your kid occupied and in shape. Those are great goals but travel is not an efficient way to achieve them. |
| Cost for us was 10-15k, plus our marriage so the lawyers came up with the total costs financially. |
Very wise and accurate breakdown. Agree 100% |
