Deadlines enforcement arbitrary

Anonymous
DD's teachers seem to enforce the deadlines based on who they like. They will give some students grades even if they submit assignments past the deadline but others will get 0s. What does MCPS policy say about this? How can principals enforce a more fair system?
This is new this year but DD is seeing several teachers do this. A friend with no extra time on a 504 or IEP will get some leeway but another kid will not get leeway because the teachers don't like them.

How do you know what the IEPs and 504s say and who has them? Maybe just get the work done on time.

Agree with this above. Unless you kid has verifiable evidence of multiple incident of supposed double standard, I would suggest having your DD focus on themselves turning work in on time. There could be IEPsor 504s she doesn't know about at play. Or excused absences.

The most that could be accomplished by complaining is that teachers stop allowing extra time for their pets who don’t have 504s or IEPs guaranteeing such accommodation — and that’s only if that’s actually happening now. Complaining will not result in more students getting deadline extensions. Your dd doesn’t have all the information. Stop being petty.

Yes we are seeing that.

Is your child rude to the teacher? Teachers like kids who are polite and respectful and come to class on time

Many teachers have their personal favorites and kids they don't like sometimes it can be based on discriminatory feelings rather than politeness, respect and being on time.

Teachers have too much power which is why we see so many cases of abuse.

Where is this power? Teachers absolutely do not have any power. Unless they have a checked out admin. And I think there would be more issues than grading then.

This is coming from your child. Who doesn’t see the whole picture or understand the nuances of grading expectations, especially for special education and EML students.

If teachers had any power, believe me - MCPS would not be in the academic decline it is.

I’m sure you’re DD’s assessment of her friend’s academic conditions is accurate.

MYOB and tell your kid to get her work done.

You contact the Principal if you have a complaint about a teacher. If anything happens, what will happen is that no one gets any extension.

I know some teachers have favorites. My DD is much appreciated by teachers and was allowed to keep her phone and use her chromebook in class when other kids were not. Why? Because some teachers saw she was reading classics instead of goofing off and playing video games. She's an excellent student, and generally quiet and well-behaved, so... sometimes leeway is given.

Same. Op there isn’t much you can do. As long as the due date and deadline were clearly communicated. If the teacher isn’t providing an assignment list with this information -ask for it and place a copy in a highly visible spot so your dd can keep track of the assignment for her classes. Also this a good lesson to kids that favoritism is applied in lots of places. Sometimes your dd will benefit from that sometimes not. It’s not fair and all you can do it try your best. Good luck to your dd.

How are posters on this thread seeing all this? Do you really have intimate knowledge of everything going on in a classroom? Are you privy to each 504, IEP, and email?

Your child doesn’t know why things are being differentiated in a classroom. There are many students and many variables.

This whole grading policy is set up to fail and cause problems. It is impossible to implement with fidelity. There are too many variables that will make this trouble for all involved. How do absences factor into this policy? (does it matter if the absence was excused or unexcused). When does the parent inform the school that the absence was excused. All of those things will make it impossible for a teacher to keep up with. You want feedback on writing assignments, but can a teacher actually grade and provide feedback within that two week period. How many plannings periods did they lose because of covering classes or dealing with behavior issues. It is not the teachers fault. Don't blame them. If you want to complain, yes complain to admin. But not about the teacher, about the policy. Teachers are put in a position that they didn't want. What do you think is going to happen when a teacher follows the policy with fidelity. Students will fail. More students than last year. What do you think is going to happen then. Admin will question teachers as to why this is. Admin will ask teachers to give students 'grace', err on the side of the student.

And how do you know that some students don't have accommodations for extra time? When they talk to students, they don't say to the whole class "Larla has an IEP and an extra-time accommodation, so her due date is this."

Do you want to tell readers the class by any chance?
