Protecting trees from spotted lantern flies?

What's the best way? We have a lot of them in/on a tree.

If the tree is Tree of Heaven, remove the tree -- it's invasive anyway. Otherwise, it is highly unlike that they will damage the tree.

To get rid of them, knock them into soapy water (don't spray as that will just kill all the beneficial insects). You can find some on line DIY traps.

You can also locate and kill the egg masses by scraping them off surfaces into bags.
