Taylor's CIP proposal includes shutting down Silver Spring International MS in 2031 and using it as a secondary holding school. Students would be reassigned to Eastern and Sligo, both to be renovated and expanded.
Sligo Creek ES would also be relocated to a new site TBD. |
| Sorry, Eastern would be a full replacement and expansion. Sligo a renovation and expansion. |
| I smell another boundary study! |
|
And in the meantime, SSIMS students will experience a wave of new teachers coming in, as current teachers will be looking for a new permanent position. Those new teachers will likely include a lot of new, inexperienced teachers.
And the solution is to make the current SSIMS a HOLDING school? If the facility wasn't good enough in 1997 for the Blair community, and isn't good enough for the SSIMS community (beginning in 2031), then how is it good enough for a holding school in 2032 beginning in 2032?? It is a completely derelict building. And, if it isn't safe for SSIMS and SCES to be next to a purple line station (and its current construction zone), then how is it safe for a holding school population to be next to the purple line station? |
And not addressed was where will Eastern MS students attend while their new building is going up? Is there enough space on their grounds to build next to current building? |
Yes, the plan says they will stay on site in the existing building while the new building is being constructed elsewhere on the site. |
|
So am I understanding this right?
1) Construction starts on Eastern, to be completed by the end of the 2029-2030 year (4 years from now) 2) SSIMS closes at the end of the 2029-2030 year and students are reassigned to either Sligo or Einstein 3) The Sligo kids, including the SSIMS kids who have just been newly assigned to Sligo, spend the 2030-2031 year in the SSIMS building while Sligo is being renovated 4) Sligo kids move back into the larger Sligo in 2031-2032 |
I thought its first year as a holding school would be 2031-32. |
| That Sligo class with the boundary study and everything else is going to be so chaotic with many moves. Why can't we plan better for fewer disruptions of our kids! |
Einstein is a high school. |
Sorry, typo, meant Eastern |
There is enough room on that school property to build a new facility at the back of the property, nearer to more housing. I am sure that the neighbors will protest - they did before. But Eastern is mired in mold, so I hope that the rebuilding effort will be successful. |
Last year of SSIMS would be 2029-30. Then it's a holding school during 2030-31 for Sligo. |
| They are currently rebuilding SSIMS... what a waste. Taylor needs to go. |
Hardly. |
