Peony roots?

Anonymous
How long can I hold peony roots before planting them out? Do they need to go into the dirt right away after receiving them, or will they wait a couple weeks?

You can keep them for a couple of weeks, but make sure they don’t dry out.

As in keep them in damp soil, or just keep them from dessicating on the windowsill, or...?

I love peonies and would love to have them, but I have NO idea how to grow them (yet).

Peonies are really easy to grow. They just take a couple of years to bloom the way you want..

I kill everything except weeds. I am not very atrentive to my plants.

I put my peonies on the corner of my house that gets morning sun, then forgot about them. They are thriving, with no attention or effort from me. Even the one that we ran over with a mower 2 years in a row and it still came back every year to bloom.

The charming Coral Sunset peony that used to bloom on my birthday is no longer alive due to all the rain that we had last spring. I regret not improving the drainage with vermiculite or perlite.

If you have never grown them, be aware that ants like to cluster on peony flower heads when they are at the tight ball stage.

OP here. Good to know! Is there something I should do about that, or is it fine for the flowers (just don't bring them inside)?

I got them planted out today. I watered them in a little, and we're supposed to get rain tonight. Thanks for the tips and support. Here's hoping they grow!

That's great! You don't need to do anything about the ants. I've been able to cut the flowers and wash the ants off before putting them in a vacuum.

Just water them every other day for the next week, twice a week for the next 3 weeks unless we get a good amount of rain.

PP. About the ants. Just expect them to be there. It was my biggest surprise about peonies. I like to look at my flowers. I didn't do anything to get rid of the ants. It's just kind of gross.

Fine for the flowers - it's mutualism, where the peonies are "paying" ants for protection.

I hope yours will thrive! We have peonies that were transported from Michigan by a family member many, many years ago ( probably 50 years or even longer) and just get better every year.
