Insomnia/night waking

Anonymous
17 DD (Audhd) has been having insomnia 1-2 nights per month and a lot of night waking. She is not on ADHD meds and doesn’t drink caffeine. We are doing a sleep study but they didn’t have openings until November. Melatonin doesn’t work for her, and she does a whole relaxation routine (warm shower, no screens, relaxing ceiling lights, etc) an hour before bed.

That stinks. As an adult, I have used the smallest bit of Trazodone or Xanax to help me sleep through the night as needed. I don't know if they'd consider that at her age, but you could ask about those.

Melatonin gave my adhd teen vivid dreams that woke her up

Magnesium glycinate works
Hydroxine prescribed also works well

Op, this was an issue for my extremely anxious DD (10 years), also has ADHD. DD was struggling with insomnia and mid-sleep wake ups 2-3 times per week. I don’t know how she was functioning as this went on for almost a year.

It actually got better when her stimulant meds were increased and we added in magnesium. She already takes a small amount of melatonin every evening.

We also made tweaks to bedtime routine. No sleeping in on weekends and very rare late nights - basically a steady sleep schedule all the time, and uses a noise machine again. Of course no clock in the bedroom.

Now insomnia is down to once per month or so, and only a couple of hours sleep loss.

if you're doing all of the reasonable things, then time to rule out thiamine deficiency, mold toxicity (hidden toxic mold in the home), and parasites (esp if you see an increase in insomnia around the time of full or new moon). Consider treating empirically with an OTC parasite med like combantrim
