Sick leave / shutdown

Hi, wasn’t sure if this goes in jobs or health…


Fed here working on a special project that will likely require me to work (at least part time) if there’s a shutdown. My management is going through the process today to get me approved.

I have a surgery scheduled for early October. I can’t change / reschedule it. I’d be out at least one day, maybe two. I’ve asked my manger (haven’t heard back yet), but I’m curious - does anyone know if I’d have to use my sick leave? I have enough but not a large “reserve” and would really prefer to save it if I can.

your boss should be able to move you to furlough status, you shouldnt have to take leave. but you'll need go check with hr and your supervisor-- "should" only goes so far these days

You can't take leave during a shutdown, you can only be furloughed. If you don't show because you're sick, you are put in furlough. The question is whether they'll bring you out of that status afterward - some will, some won't.
