I need a strategy for getting out of conversations

Anonymous
I tend to get trapped in longwinded conversations… where the other party is unloading/dominating the conversation and I’m a sounding board. Sometimes I don’t mind, but I’m often pressed for time and need an exit strategy.

Examples include a coworker who corners me while I’m at my desk. Or recently a back to school night where a fellow parent monopolized my time and I missed out on meeting several of my child’s teachers.

What’s a breezy, inoffensive way out?

1. At work just don't ask anyone questions. Instead of "Did you have a good weekend?" say "Let's all have a good week" or something. Instead of "Do you have any plans for this weekend?" just say "Have a great weekend!"

2. If a chatty Cathy asks you a non-work question when you're walking by just give a 1-3 word answer and DON'T slow down your pace. Don't stop walking.

3. If Chatty Cathy comes to talk to you and stays, just say "Sorry but I really need to start prepping for my meeting/answering some of these emails/whatever."

4. At school you could have just interrupted and said "Sorry to interrupt but i have to run so I can meet my child's teachers, great catching up!" and then WALK AWAY.

"Gosh, I got to run! Hey, so nice to see you!"

If they stop by to chat, then just listen and nod but don't start any new topics...
They just want your attention, after a few minutes, smile and point to computer or say something like "great talk" if they don't get it!
If you like them, then say let's have lunch soon

School: I’m sorry, but I have to dash to…

Kid conferences
Fill in the blank

…Leave

Or, “Oh no, I’m missing out on mtg the teachers! …Run away

Work: Sarah, I hear you and all of that sounds hard/great but I’m under a deadline so have to get back to this….point to computer

Or, “I’d love to talk more but I need to get X done”

Or, “I know I sound like a nerd, but I need to turn back to X now”

Start with “I only have a few minutes but want to chat for a second about ___.”

The other party now knowing this should “let me make this quick” ..

The trick is to say it while in motion. Don't stop, or you will be stopped.
