When will I know if I really messed up my finger?

About an hour ago I caught my finger in a drawer. When I happened my vision went white with pain and I thought surely it would be broken or my fingernail broken off, but nothing other than immense pain. An hour later it’s still tender, warm, has a heart beat, and hurts when I use it, but no swelling or even redness. Should I do anything?

Can you make a fist? Can you extend your fingers?

If you have that full range of motion it is unlikely to be anything broken.

Take some Advil and ice it.

Take some Advil and ice it. When I broke my thumb I could bend it but it was about twice the size of my other thumb. The next morning I couldn't bend it.

When DS broke his finger, he couldn't make a fist or extend it fully.

If you hit your nail bed, the skin underneath is super tender. You may wake up tomorrow with a discolored nail.
