DS has dyslexia and started off the school year with a 504. Her dyslexia is moderate and certainly enough to qualify for an IEP. New to all this, help me understand the benefit of an IEP vs a 504 for a dyslexic student in MS?
I understand how it’s beneficial in ES but how does it make a difference in MS? What additional support do MS students truly get with an IEP targeted to support a dyslexic student |
Who says she qualifies for an IEP?
Honest question. Because a lot of parents think they can just request one and boom it happens but that's not how it works. |
My understanding is s 504 stays with you and allows for accommodations and an IEP is for specific supports you can “ grow” out of.
My kid with adhd has a 504 but not an iep. Iep isn’t needed. She’s in MS. |
It was strongly recommended in the evaluation conducted by the psychologist from Mindwell. Her scores are VERY low in the areas of working memory, spelling, decoding… I am talking 2 percentile etc. We are already working with an ASDEC tutor three times a week. I am just trying to understand for an MS, how an IEP helps her over 504 accommodations. |
That's not untrue but not the definition of a 504 or IEP. 504 is for accommodations (extra time on tests, etc) while and IEP is for specialized instruction. |
And IEP is always going to offer more services than the 504. If you think she needs it, start talking to the school now because they'll have to find her eligible and that takes a while. It's a good thing you already have the outside diagnoses and suggestions. |
My child had similar %s and our private neuropsychologist said (verbally) 504/would not meet need for IEP. We shared the full report and school also concluded an IEP was not necessary, could be met by 504 |
