| Would someone mind explaining what the options are at APS when it comes to orchestra. My understanding is that there for honors orchestra you have to audition. Are there any other options for students who audition and don’t get in? My daughter is a 5th grader and plays the violin for her elementary school’s orchestra. She does not take extra violin lessons but has been taking piano lessons since she was 5. Thank you! |

Orchestra is an elective in middle school.
Not all APS middle schools may handle group placement the same way. Which middle school are you asking about? |

Thanks so much PP. We are zoned for Williamsburg. I know it’s a bit early to ask but my daughter keeps asking me if she can continue orchestra in middle school. I didn’t grow up in the US so have no idea how these things work |

She will absolutely get a spot if she wants one (unless there is a schedule conflict). The only question is what group she may be placed in. |

Are you thinking about the district-wide honors orchestra? According to this link, that starts in 6th grade. My kid did the band version and it was a really nice experience. I don't think it is particularly hard to get into - if your kid practices regularly, she should be OK.
