Did your child’s base personality stay the same through childhood and into adulthood?

Mine is sensitive but easygoing and has always been an active but easy kid. He is enthusiastic about many things and it’s not hard to get him to do homework or go to activities. People keep telling me “just wait until X time” - so far I’ve been warned about terrible twos, threenagers, entering school, and so on. He has changed (different interests / friends) but I feel like at base he is really the same kid. People also tell me to get ready for college and beyond because sons do not remain close with their mothers, which always depresses me.

Am I in for a rude awakening in middle school or once puberty hits? Of course, I will parent the child I have. But… should I be bracing myself?
