Maryland unclaimed property

Anonymous
Is anyone else in Maryland Unclaimed Property circles of hell?

I have a few hundred dollars that has been stuck there for almost a year.
I have submitted all the info needed, but the system has been 'stuck' for a long time--I keep getting messages about a computer system upgrade.
I spent 25 min on hold trying to get someone on the phone but had to give up (the recorded message about upgrading their system for 'tomorrow' is....something else).

Apparently there used to be an ombudsman, but that office doesn't exist anymore and the number is not in service.

Does anyone have any intel about what is going on there and who to escalate to? Or a connection to a local reporter who is interested in doing a story on what I can only imagine is gross incompetence?

I would contact the Office of the State Comptroller.

Sometimes Tweeting a complaint can be effective.

Sorry, I don’t have a contact or any recent info.

I’ve had two experiences with unclaimed property. The first was great! About 10 years ago, I received a check out of the blue without even knowing I was on a list. I’m guessing they matched my tax info, SS#, address, and just processed it automatically.

The second time was about three years ago. I got a postcard in the mail and reached out to the Unclaimed Property Unit via email. To claim it, I would’ve needed to send a couple of proof-of-identity documents, including a copy of my card SS#, either by mail or by scanning and emailing a PDF after requesting an encrypted email link(?). The process was supposed to take 8–12 weeks. Since the amount was <$200, I decided to wait for a potentially easier process and ended up doing nothing. Honestly, I had completely forgotten about it until now.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Hope it gets resolved!
