How do you label DCUM? (Take political talk to politics forum where there is already a thread about Kirk, Robinson et al.)
“There clearly was a leftist ideology,” Cox said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” citing interviews with Robinson’s relatives and acquaintances. “Friends have confirmed that there was kind of that deep, dark internet, the Reddit culture, and these other dark places of the internet where this person was going deep.” -Utah Gov. Cox |
It’s not a dark place. It’s responsibly and thoughtfully moderated. |
RIDICULOUS premise.
Reddit is nice and friendly, with rules and moderators. Cox is, like many old people, very badly uninformed. |
As a conservative, I see DCUM as useful on some family issues about kids and sports and finances. But also find that many conservative points of view are heavily moderated and deleted much more than progressive points of view. So yes it is a progressive forum with sometimes hilarious takes on reality, but not a part of the deep dark internet. |
Exactly. That was scary to hear. And he is just one. How do educate people like him? |
Ha. Reddit is a bunch of different forums all hosted by the same site. Each one has it's own personality and moderation. Some are lovely and some are cesspools. |
Agree. Thank you Jeff! |
Wait until he finds out about 4chan. |
Reddit is one of the sanest spots on the internet -- a forum where people have room to actually ask sincere question and the most relevant answer is upvoted. DCUM is definitely darker, bc of the anonymity and the structure lending itself to cruelty. I'm sure there are places that are dark -- 4chan? dischord? no idea. maybe he's confused by that. |
Cox is only 50 years old. |
No right wing authority figure will ever admit that most of the deep dark internet is full of white supremacists and ultra-nationalists. |
As my kids say: never trust anyone over 30 with tech. |
Reddit is also a place where moderators in generic forums (like r/pics or r/mademesmile) will ban users for participating in forums they don’t like, like r/jordanpeterson for example. There are useful forums for sure, but many of the most popular forums are moderated by a few “super mods” who don’t tolerate any stepping out of line from leftist viewpoints. |
The darkest places are in the dark web, so by definition you don't know the names of the platforms. Discord was originally for gaming and therefore full of kids, but has some servers that are adult-oriented and very disturbing, which is why you are warned not to let your kids interact unsupervised on Discord. There's potential for grooming and violent imagery. 4-chan is for reactionary adults and so by definition will have disturbing content and extremist views of all types. But the dark web has no public name. That's where you can buy enriched uranium, find your weapons dealer, risk identification by trying to pay in crypto that's more or less traceable, and let loose with the worst of what the human mind can imagine in torture and sexual abuse. |
