Extracurriculars for High Functioning Teen with Anxiety & ASD?

Anonymous
13 y.o. DS is in a Bridge program. Has never done sports or any other activities outside of school. I think a lot of it is social anxiety, fear of rejection, never having had any positive result or sense of acceptance from peers in groups. I think it would be so great for him to be involved in something outside of school, hoping to help re-wire some of these negative feelings. Are there any recommendations for community or school activities that a HFA teen could manage? As far as his interests, I would say mainly Youtube, but watches a lot of history videos, also does like Roblox, Minecraft, and watching soccer, not playing it. We tried an online "Outschool" Roblox club but he wasn't too into it. Thank you!

My kid who attended a private school similar to the Bridge program in size and student profile enjoyed robotics, rock climbing, and board games. There's a really supportive board game club for teens with disabilities that meets in Rockville and Bethesda. https://gamenight.space/

Thanks so much! Your mentioning rock climbing made me remember that he likes obstacle courses and ropes courses, so I'm going to check into things like Parkour. Hoping for something that can help build self-esteem while having fun and not expose him to more teasing or rejection.

It's been years, but pre-covid my kids really liked MoCo Movement. Parkour-ish, but in a mostly SN setting, so hopefully less likely for judgment/teasing.
