What are your tips for coping on the longest flight on the planet? DFW to aukland, btw. Ugh. solo - no kids in tow! TIA |
I’ve flown with kids on the actual longest flight, NYC-Singapore. It’s totally fine. Sleep as much as you can, drink lots of water, get up and move, watch a lot of movies. |
You can google this-there are umpteen articles on this. You will be fine. You're not even travelling with kids.

Shouldn’t be a big deal if you have no kids in tow. I would get an aisle seat and drink lots of water |
Sleep for most of it |
I am doing something similar but with a 11 and 13 year old - we have never taken anywhere close to such a long flight! Here for any suggestions ... |
Honestly this sounds like a dream. 17 hours to just sit there and read, sleep and watch movies?
We often go to South America, but it's 15 hours with kids and it basically like hell. They don't sleep, need constant entertainment and they hate all the food. |
i get wasted in the airport lounge beforehand.
sleep & hydrate ON the plane. |
Ambien. |
I'm sympathetic, OP. After about 6 hours, I start to feel really claustrophobic. I think I would want a full show to binge watch. I watched most of Hacks on a flight to Europe a year or so ago and that was pretty good.
I think I could read for the first couple of hours and then I'd be too antsy. Get a good neck pillow. I have several and don't love any of them but I guess the Trtl is probably the best. And compression socks obviously. |
Please don't do this. -person who has seen drunk passengers engage in all sorts of poor behavior on planes. |
I used to live in Auckland and family was in dc so did this many times. It’s actually more pleasant than a hop to Europe where you don’t get enough sleep. I use Tylenol pm and an eye mask and tend to get about 7/8 straight hours of sleep. For the rest of it, you can get through a ton of work online, clear out a bunch of emails or catch up on something you’re behind on. I also tend to bring a new book and oddly some type of small thing I can do in the event of no WiFi. Generally I bring a little needlepoint kit or a small notebook with charcoal pencils or even one of those mindless adult coloring books. Just get up every hour or so, even if it’s to grab a snack in the galley or go to the restroom just to stretch your legs |
Did plenty of the 14 hours from US to Dubai/back as well as a number from UAE to Australia or NZ.
First half is the longest. Second half goes by quickly. You get fed at least three times. Watch movies and read and nap. No choice but get it over with and it will be over! |
Thank you all. 1st world problem I know but i'm terrified.

Are you in economy? Or business class or first class? Economy makes it much harder, of course.
Try to sleep for a big chunk of it and don’t eat all the food that they gave you on the flight. I mean that recently and wound up getting sick. Bring a Book, and plan to watch several movies. if you sleep for eight of the 17 hours, you should be OK |
