I think the school library has a very good collection of books and I'm wondering what are some ways your child makes best use of it? Do they go only once a week? Do they know how to look up different categories and choose books to suit their interests? Are you able to browse and help them pick books?
I didn't study in this country and not in a school with such resources, so looking for suggestions. TIA. |
My child used to get to school as soon as the doors opened (he has since graduated) so he had time go to the library before class started and the librarian was more than happy to help him select books. Does your school offer this option? |
Our FCPS elementary often offered upper elementary kids the chance to go to the library during their choice block. I agree they stock a lot of great books in the library and it's nice when kids can put it to use.
I taught my kids to use the school library catalogue at home so they knew where to find things quickly. |
When DD was in first grade, there was a book in the library that she loved. For some reason, it really spoke to her. (I never understood why. I did not especially care for it.) She checked it out at every opportunity. I think she was the only child that ever checked it out. When the librarian did the "purging," she sent the book home with my DD with a beautiful note saying that they had to clear out books every year and this was one they were clearing out. She wanted DD to have it because she knew how much she loved it.
A grateful mom. |
lol. There’s no time to do that now with the metal detectors. |
Are there metal detectors in the elementary schools? |
It depends on the grade - my 4th grader has library as a "special" where they learn everything you are discussing plus some other fun STEAM-related things. My middle schooler hasn't said anything about the library, which I think is a shame. |
My 4th grader goes once a week with her class as a 'special'. They spend some of their time on a themed lesson and then have free search/read time. They can place holds for books and the librarian will send them to their classroom once they're returned, and will usually make an alternate recommendation in the meantime. |
