Super confused about the new message from MCPS: titled “MCPS Regional/Countywide High School Application Programs for Entrance in the 2026–2027 School Year”
The program link is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ynY7xCOoBTUzNgL79FfSuWcx4l8_-UUROcYmIbOzqiI/edit?usp=drivesdk This is so different from the regional program presented last month. And it’s open to current 9th, 10th and 11th graders?? Is this a brand new thing or something that I just simply missed before? |
| That’s the same thing. I told you not to believe them. |
Oh good grief! But why it’s open to current HSchoolers? “This message is for families of Grades 9, 10 and 11 students who attend Montgomery County Public Schools. Grades 9-11 students, as the new school year kicks off and you begin to think about your high school options for next year, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is excited to share information about the wide array of opportunities that are available at the high school level.” |
| These are existing programs that allow entry after grade 9 |
Why are you confused? The new regional programs were never supposed to start this year or next. This is just the status quo. |

+1. This isn't about the new regional programs. |
| Regional programs are a year or two away |
+1 To emphasize- these are the existing programs that students can apply to in HS. They’ve been around for years and this is the normal time for information sessions. Most of these are career focused, but there are also dual enrollment and other in-school academic programs. |
I want to pull out this post because it is so indicative of the problems with this board, and some of the folks on it. As others have pointed out, these are longstanding programs that you typically cannot enter until 10th or 11th grades. They are things like the law enforcement or architecture half-day programs at Edison, which you cannot even apply to coming out of 8th grade. But this PP posts an incendiary and uninformed message that aims to tear down the relationship between the schools and families. Are they ignorant? Are they trolling? Do they potentially represent an interest group that would benefit from damaging trust in public schools? It's worth asking yourself these questions when reading DCUM, and particularly the sections of this website that deal with public schools. |
With very good reason. |
