"Millions of Americans have been urged to avoid driving amid concerns over high air pollution levels. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued air quality alerts in Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana on Friday. The warnings mean ground-level ozone and particulate concentrations are forecast to reach dangerous levels. In some areas, the pollution comes from drifting wildfire smoke."

Santiago Chile had a major pollution problem and was able to put some brakes on it by requiring people to only drive every other day (they police it based on your license plate numbers so I guess you could avoid it by buying multiple cars).
