Poolesville HS-as a non magnet, local freshman

We are considering the move to live on town to access PHS as a local town resident next year.

Looking for feedback on how the HS feels for non magnet, town kids in the independent study track.

How large are typical classes? Wondering if the magnet cohort classes keep overall class size below 30?

Small classes and kids don’t care which track your kid’s on. A good choice for your kid.

depending on what grade(s) the kid(s) are in, keep a look out for the info on boundary study and program analysis.

Just do it. Live in town and enjoy. My kid loves it. Teachers are great. Smaller than most high schools and therefore smaller classes. My kid is a senior.

How would a gender non conforming kid fair? Realize the school pulls from all over Moco so does PHS lean moderate, liberal or conservative?

The locals lean conservative, but the magnet students lean liberal, so nobody feels like they don’t fit in. Poolesville has its share of gender non conforming kids. Every kind of kid will fit in with someone there.

I think the kids are kind. There is so much diversity, you can find your own people. Mine were in magnets but had friends that were not in them. Friends that went to top Us (MIT, CM, GTetc) and friends that went to CC.

Class sizes vary. Can be 30+
PHS is amazing- nothing but good things to say about it

School will bow down to help your kid to fit in as will every other MCPS school. Lots of classes about acceptance etc. living in town is different than school. if you are looking to live IN town then you will need to be accepting of the conservatives who live here too. You accept them and they will accept you. Just being honest.

PHS is on our list as well. Does this HS provide any kind of academic support given its all magnet status? What about academic support for students that are not affiliated with a magnet cohort?

Not anymore. Newly developed communities are diverse, and the population is keep growing with new people from everywhere.

Poolesville may be less conservative than it used to be, but it’s still very conservative compared to MoCo as a whole.
