Squirrel is eating our juvenile hornbeam

Anonymous
We have a young hornbeam tree in our front yard. A squirrel recently started eating the leaves. A lot of the leaves. I read that this is bad for a young tree. Any ideas for how to keep the squirrel out of the tree? We have a baffle on the shepherd’s hook on which our Bird Buddy hangs. Could we put a baffle on the tree? It’s in the middle of the yard so a squirrel has to climb the tree to get the leaves.

Pellet gun will solve the problems.

This late in the season loosing leaves won’t really hurt the little tree, OP. It’s already shutting down for the winter. The squirrel will move on to destroying something else soon enough. Your tree should leaf out just fine in the spring. It may also put out another flush of leaves in the coming week or two.

Shoot it. Legal to do for pests. No hunting license required in that instance.

The law is very clear on this. Not sure about eating it though, as that might get into a gray area. But who is going to know Amiright?

You can absolutely shoot squirrels and consume them in Fairfax County. As long as they are on your property.

Of course they are. Or this post would not exist.

I hate dogs and their owners who let them piss in my garden and kill my plants. Can I shoot them too?

You cannot randomly shoot "game animals" on your property or not, unless it's within hunting season and you are a licensed hunter.
Very serious consequences for illegal poaching of "the king's animals" even in the USA.

Now cats, etc. which are not considered game animals, yes you can hunt them on your own property without a license and there are no restrictions on that.
