Just Moved to Public from Private - Why All the SPED Kids in Regular Ed??

Anonymous
We just moved to public from private and my kid has come home 2 days in a row talking about kids who clearly have issues that I guess would be classified as autistic or special ed. For example, two kids who repeat the same things over and over again and rock back and forth, stimming activities, etc.

How is my kid supposed to learn while
next to a kid who is this distracting? Why does my kid’s education have to be compromised so that someone else’s child can be mainstreamed? Is there an issue with just sitting all of these kids together so that they can distract one another?

They don't do self-contained classes for kids who are labelled special ed anymore. Schools are supposed to be as absolutely inclusive as possible, yes at your kid's expense.

If your kid is distracted by someone else merely rocking back and forth, they have a lot of growing and developing to do. Which is fine -- it's kindergarten and public school teaches everyone, not just the already perfect kids.

There absolutely are self contained classes, for those whose disability requires it. Nothing the OP said suggested that gen ed is inappropriate for those kids.

Yes…that’s what OP said. They’re new to public school.

If things don't settle down by conference time you could request he gets moved next time the teacher rearranges. Asking the first week of school is inappropriate.
