Should high schoolers report to homeroom on first day of school?

Or to first period class?

I believe homeroom.

This is going to vary by school.

Homeroom. That’s when they hand out schedules and go over messaging around new policies. School should have posters or something showing homeroom locations based on last name and grade.

You should check the communication from your students school. Try ParentVUE, ParentSquare, remind, or maybe an old fashioned email. I promise you, the information is out there.

Ha! No communication from our HS about where to go tomorrow. Today’s transition day was a shitshow. My kid had to use the screenshot I sent them of their schedule to walk through classes today.

In high school? Can't believe they didn't get a personal escort? Maybe an engraved schedule posted in the hallways for them?

All it takes is a competent principal to send an email stating where students meet when they get to school. Then another competent adult to print student schedules and put them in teacher mailboxes. Nobody is asking for an escort. Just common sense and continuity between schools

You would like every student to be provided with a printed schedule from the school?!? In high school?!?! Who would manage those 2000 pieces of paper?

That would be in excess of three thousand printed schedules at our school. Sorry you didn't teach your kid to be prepared

We had a lot of kids, mainly ESLs, not get to homeroom or went to the wrong homeroom even though their was assigned seating in our auditorium. Took a while to get sorted out especially if they have two last names but don’t go by the first one. Had some kids show up who weren’t registered.

Many, many high schoolers don’t handle maps well anymore. So getting to class could be frustrating.

Basically a normal first day for freshman.

My kid was class of 2020 and every year she was given a paper copy of her schedule in HR the first day of the semester. I agree it seems more likely they would access it electronically now but it's not totally insane to think they would be provided.

Agree. Plus there are kids new to MCPS that can’t access anything online yet

Bethesda-Chevy-Chase high school's map runs to 4-5 pages, not because it's a large building, but because the multiple additions, wings and basements are not laid out in a shape that fits on one map, and the different floors for each wing are not actually on the same level as in the main building. It's the opposite of intuitive, there are tons of stairs and mini flights of stairs to connect various levels, and it's not great for anyone who needs a wheelchair. The layout makes the first week of school quite stressful for 9th graders and new students, and iNteRestinG for parents during Back to School Night.
